England QUALIFY for Euro 2020 knockout stages after Ukraine and Finland both finish third in their groups with three points, meaning that even if Gareth Southgate’s side lose to Czechs they will reach last-16

England are guaranteed to reach the knockout stages of Euro 2020 after results elsewhere ensured they will at worst qualify for the last-16 as a best third-placed team.

Three groups have now been completed, with Ukraine and Finland both ending with three points in third place of their respective groups.

Of the six groups in total, four third-placed teams will go through and with England already having four points they are now unable to miss out as a third-placed team.

Third is the worst position Gareth Southgate’s men can finish in Group D, so it is now impossible for the Three Lions to crash out in the group stages of the tournament.

It is also good news for the Czech Republic, France and Sweden, who are all now in the same position and unable to go out in the group stages of the Euros.

That said, the news is unlikely to see England take their foot off the gas at Wembley on Tuesday night, as they look for a second win of the group stages against the Czech Republic.

England won their opening match of the tournament 1-0 against Croatia with Raheem Sterling scoring the only goal, before a drab 0-0 against Scotland followed on Friday night.

The results on Monday night also means that if Scotland beat Croatia at Hampden Park on Tuesday, they will be guaranteed to go through, with their tally of four points impossible to be worse than Ukraine and Finland’s three points.

Steve Clarke’s side will be without star man Billy Gilmour, though, after he tested positive for Covid-19 in the aftermath of the England game.
